This fellowship is run by ESA, the Shoulder Section of ESSKA was established in memory of Prof. Philippe Hardy - a colleague, friend, who will always be remembered as a reference in shoulder surgery and academic activity in the orthopaedics’ world.

The purpose of this fellowship is to contribute to the development of skills of young orthopaedic surgeons who are already into shoulder surgery, namely arthroscopy and arthroplasty.

The selected Fellows will visit five-six Teaching Centres over a three week period and complete their fellowship at an ESSKA/ESA Meeting. The fellowship covers various aspects of sports, trauma and degenerative lesions of the shoulder such as arthritis, instabilities, rotator cuff and acromio-clavicular lesions.

There are three positions available.

The fellowship programme will cover travel, accommodation, meals and minor expenses.

Objectives

  • Accompany the host in his/her clinical practice: consultation and operating room.
  • Be able to examine the injured extremity with a high level of sophistication and detail to determine any bony or ligamentous injury, tendon injury, nerve injury, or arterial injury of the extremity.
  • Be able to discuss different approaches in terms of diagnosis and indications for surgery.
  • Develop competence in shoulder surgical procedures – arthroscopic and open procedures
  • Be able to order appropriate diagnostic tests and imaging studies to assist with diagnosis and accurate assessment of the level/severity of the injury.
  • Be able to interpret diagnostic test and imaging studies (Xrays, CT scan, MRI) to assist with diagnosis and accurate assessment of the level/severity.
  • Achieve an understanding of the host’s indications for surgery in shoulder pathology.
  • Develop competence in diagnosis and management of shoulder trauma as well as complications of shoulder surgery, namely in sports medicine.
  • Evaluate outcomes of surgical intervention in shoulder pathology in the outpatient clinics.
  • Exposure to current research methods in shoulder pathology.
  • Demonstrate the ability to interact effectively, professionally, and empathetically with patients and Department members.
  • Prepare the fellow for entry into practice as an independent shoulder specialist and future leader in the field of shoulder surgery.

Requirements

To qualify, you must:

  • be a certified orthopaedic surgeon in your own country / final years of residency
  • be under 45 years at the time of applying
  • have completed (within the last four years) shoulder surgery training programmes
  • speak fluent English
  • be a European citizen
  • be available for the whole period of the programme
  • make a presentation of a research topic during the fellowship
  • submit a written report at the end of the programme
  • be/become an ESSKA and ESA member
