The Women in ESSKA Mentorship Programme is designed to connect young female orthopaedic surgeons and sports medicine professionals with experienced mentors in the field for inspiration, guidance and support.

Programme Structure:

  • Criteria Review and Development: The Women in ESSKA Mentorship Programme criteria have been developed in alignment with ESSKA's standards for Fellowships. These criteria have undergone a rigorous review process, with final approval by our Women in ESSKA committee.

  • Programme: We aim to onboard a minimum of 10 mentors, each committed to facilitating at least one resident/fellow visit per year.

Empowering Women in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Through Mentorship The Women in ESSKA Mentorship Programme is more than just a platform for professional development; it is a community where women support women, fostering a culture of empowerment, collaboration, and growth.

Criteria

Mentors: 

  • Experienced orthopaedics and sports medicine professionals passionate about sharing their knowledge and expertise.
  • Applicants must be an ESSKA paid member

 

Mentees: 

  • Women pursuing careers in orthopaedics and sports medicine, including students, residents, and fellows, looking to benefit from mentorship.
  • Applicants must be/become an ESSKA paid member and be under 45 years old.

Aleris is a private Hospital in Tromsø, Norway. Within Orthopaedics, we have specialists in Hand-, Shoulder-, Foot & ankle- and Knee-surgery. The clinic is small with 3 operating rooms in addition to the medical center. I have a mixed practice where most of my patients are knee and ankle. I also have some gen. sports injury patients like tendon injuries, groin injuries and some acute fractures in foot & ankle. About 60% of my patients are athletes. In knee and ankle, I do mostly arthroscopic procedures; ACL reconstructions, meniscal repairs, Ankle ligament repair, os trigonom etc

A visit by me could possibly be combined with a stay with Berte Bøe in Oslo - as this will give a great variety and will offer a great opportunity to see 2 very different part of Norway.

MHH is an orthopaedic hospital that only deals with planned surgery. I am a senior consultant at the knee and shoulder department, and we do various surgeries within arthroscopic surgery and prosthetic surgery on the knee and shoulder. My department consists of 8 senior consultants. I am mostly dedicated to shoulder patients together with Senior Consultant Stefan Moosmayer, but we are all involved in both knee and shoulder surgery. If you do an internship with us, you can take part in outpatient consultations, observe collaboration with other professional groups, such as physiotherapists, and observe maybe assist in surgery. We have 8 operating theatres and 2-3 of these theatres are dedicated knee and shoulder every day.

The Sports Clinic of the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) is a centre of excellence in interdisciplinary care of all sports-related pathologies, having received ESSKA, ISAKOS, and SIAGASCOT recognition as a teaching centre. In 2008, the Department was accredited as Luxembourg Olympic Medical Center by the Luxembourgish Olympic Committee (COSL). It has a privileged partnership with the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) and the Luxembourg Institute of Research in Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Science (LIROMS) which is part of the French-speaking IOC Research Centre consortium (ReFORM).
The main specificity of the clinic is the interdisciplinary functioning covering all major aspects of orthopaedics (arthroscopy and joint replacement for knee, hip, ankle, and shoulder) and sports medicine (operative and non-operative orthopaedic surgery, non-orthopaedic sports medicine, and exercise physiology, as well as sports physiotherapy). Mentees will have the opportunity to observe activities of all departments involved in the Sports (e.g., up to 50 elective surgical procedures per week, patient evaluation in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, medical visits, patient follow-up). They will also be given the opportunity to learn how to use other technologies and facilities available on-site (e.g., knee laximetry, movement analysis, and 3D printing).
The Sports Clinic also display a strong scientific activity and publishes annually about 50 scientific contributions. Mentees will be invited to attend the weekly scientific staff meeting and present on a topic of their own choice. Current clinical research topics include but are not limited to: paediatric and adult meniscus and ACL injuries, lower-limb biomechanical analysis, injury registries (for epidemiology and imaging aspects) or chronic ankle instability. If interested, the mentee can request a personalised guidance and advices on general research methodology, data management, statistical analyses or writing skills and publication processes.
Finally, the department includes and welcomes many visiting surgeons from all over Europe every year, also offering the possibility to learn about the differences in surgical education, careers, and procedures in the EU.
