RESULTS AFTER GASTROCNEMIUS LENGHTENING IN CHRONIC PLANTAR FASCIITIS

Description

Objectives: Chronic plantar fasciitis (CPF) is a prevalent cause of foot pain and disability with approximately 10% of the patients requiring surgical treatment.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the outcomes of proximal release of the medial head of gastrocnemius (PRMG) for the treatment of CPF either as a single procedure or in combination with partial plantar fasciotomy (PPF).

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted. 39 surgeries for the treatment of CPF were performed. In 19 interventions PRMG was performed as a single procedure whilst in the remaining 20, PPF was also performed at the same surgical time.

Clinical reports were analyzed and patients were interviewed. American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Score (AOFAS) was used to evaluate pre and postoperative functional status.

Results: Overall satisfaction was reported by all patients. Both VAS and AOFAS had statistically significant differences between pre and postoperative values. 66,67% of the patients claimed to be completely asymptomatic after surgery and 74,36% reported an improvement in ankle dorsiflexion.
