Description
Eradication of knee periprosthetic joint infection by one stage exchange was observed in 97% of the cases. The main reason for a SSI during the follow-up time was the occurrence of a new infection with a different pathogen (15% of the index cases). These new pathogens were probably introduced into the surgical field during revision surgery. Greater efforts should be given for prevention of bacterial contamination during revision surgery, while treatment of the index infection seems to be very successful. It would be interesting to obtain the same information after two-stage exchange involving two successive revision surgeries.
